This little guy is the youngest of *SEVEN* children in a family that I had the honor of photographing at the beach last weekend! It would be the longest post ever if I showed all the beautiful kids from that photo session… What a great family!!

Boys will be Boys [Jersey Shore Photography]

Yes, of course boys will be boys when faced with lots of sand and water! It’s still a little too chilly to walk around with wet jeans though and these two teased the ocean with their toes while impressively keeping the hems dry! These guys did a great job hamming it up for the camera, and also a great job being sweet and lovable. Brothers are awesome!

What an amazing sky we had that day! Notice the Silly Bandz which is this generation’s neon Madonna bracelets. Someone out there was smart this time around and found a way to market them to boys with baseball, dragons and rock ‘n roll shapes. They’re in just about every Spring session this year! Great pop of color for photos and it shows exactly what your kids are “in” to at this stage…

I love these 2 photos together…the toothless grin, the sand in the hair and brotherly silliness are just priceless!

What inspires me to write with light

I thought I’d share a little of what inspires me, and what made me fall in love with the camera. These are 2 of my all time favorite photos, from 2 of my very favorite photographers. Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m fascinated with the early to mid-twentieth century, from the 30’s that you can see below, to early street photography, to the Mad Men era style and kitsch. The soundtrack plays Django gypsy jazz from Paris, 1930… the grit and glamor are intoxicating… we see a migrant mother in the Mid-Western USA and the stunning Coco Chanel in Paris, taken only months apart. Dorthea Lange’s quote: “The camera is an instrument that teaches [us] to see without a camera” says it all. The camera “gets” it, even if we miss it the first time around.

Looking at life through a lens helps define solitary moments in a chaotic, New-York-Minute-world. The camera forces us to find the light, focus, and then guides us to interpret the scene. What do we see and how do we see it, artistically and philosophically?

Photography: from the Greek photo (meaning light), and graph (meaning to draw or write). Find the light, and use it well.
