Welcome

Welcome to the Studio Journal for Garden Lane Photography, otherwise known as a Blog! Here you'll find samples of sessions from every season and hear about the latest offerings and news at GLP. Please don't forget to check out the more formal portfolio on my website. When you're ready to book your session or if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me and I'll forward you the passwords for the VIP Lounge. After your session, you'll be able to access your images through the private viewing gallery on my website and then you have the option of placing your order via the online shopping cart.

Finally, and unfortunately, as a photographer and not a web-designer, I've learned the hard way that just one button can delete whole sections! I've lost all of my blog posts for 2008 and 2009 so we'll be starting fresh right here, right now! Please don't hesitate to contact me at 732.610.2437 or Email Me if you have any questions or would like to discuss a Session.

In the Gloaming

“In the Gloaming, oh my darling, when the lights are soft and low

and the quiet shadows falling softly come and softly go.

When the trees are sobbing faintly with a gentle unknown woe,

will you think of me and love me as you did once, long ago?”

What a fabulous and beautiful extended family. Thank you for sharing this sunset with me.

…and last, but not least…

That title will mean a little more in the coming days… but for now, here’s the sweetest little boy who just sat and loved having his picture taken! He was visiting his Auntie from Virginia last month, and his cousins are all over this blog… so it was finally Kai’s turn!

Beach Baby

This little guy is the youngest of *SEVEN* children in a family that I had the honor of photographing at the beach last weekend! It would be the longest post ever if I showed all the beautiful kids from that photo session… What a great family!!mcm1h

Boys will be Boys [Jersey Shore Photography]

Yes, of course boys will be boys when faced with lots of sand and water! It’s still a little too chilly to walk around with wet jeans though and these two teased the ocean with their toes while impressively keeping the hems dry! These guys did a great job hamming it up for the camera, and also a great job being sweet and lovable. Brothers are awesome!

What an amazing sky we had that day! Notice the Silly Bandz which is this generation’s neon Madonna bracelets. Someone out there was smart this time around and found a way to market them to boys with baseball, dragons and rock ‘n roll shapes. They’re in just about every Spring session this year! Great pop of color for photos and it shows exactly what your kids are “in” to at this stage…

Springtime at the Shore [NJ Family Portraits]

Early Spring in Spring Lake - what a great family! Thanks for letting me know you were in the area visiting, and for braving the spring winds at the beach! Hope you like your sneak peek! I can’t tell you how much I love this first picture — I’m tempted to print it and hang it in my own living room!

What inspires me to write with light

I thought I’d share a little of what inspires me, and what made me fall in love with the camera. These are 2 of my all time favorite photos, from 2 of my very favorite photographers. Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m fascinated with the early to mid-twentieth century, from the 30’s that you can see below, to early street photography, to the Mad Men era style and kitsch. The soundtrack plays Django gypsy jazz from Paris, 1930… the grit and glamor are intoxicating… we see a migrant mother in the Mid-Western USA and the stunning Coco Chanel in Paris, taken only months apart. Dorthea Lange’s quote: “The camera is an instrument that teaches [us] to see without a camera” says it all. The camera “gets” it, even if we miss it the first time around.

Looking at life through a lens helps define solitary moments in a chaotic, New-York-Minute-world. The camera forces us to find the light, focus, and then guides us to interpret the scene. What do we see and how do we see it, artistically and philosophically?

Photography: from the Greek photo (meaning light), and graph (meaning to draw or write). Find the light, and use it well.

All babies love bathtime…

I’ve been a little absentee from my blog for a while, but not from photography. I’ve got lots of great photos to share soon!

This is a great way to show what happens during just one session. From this:
